My Studio
Harriet Mitchell
I'm Harriet, a ceramic artist based in North Devon. My background is in oil painting, but when my parents gifted me a two hour pottery lesson with Cornish Potter Rob Small, I instantly fell in love with the process. The relationship one can have with clay, the focus it demands, and the quiet joy of making something with my hands from such natural materials.
My Work
My work is centred around creating tableware, pieces that are functional, timeless and feel right. I believe that poor attention is paid to what we eat or drink from. Such beautiful home cooked food, deserves more than mass produced tableware.
I'm inspired by nature’s palette, organic textures, and the simple pleasure of mark-making, where each surface tells a story. I leave the bases of my pieces unglazed, so that one can see the raw material, I don't cover imperfections - I think this adds to the charm of having something handmade and making every piece totally unique.
All of my pieces are made using local clay and handmade glazes. I use traditional techniques that embrace the irregularities and character of the handmade process. Every piece reflects my love for the land, the materials, and the joy of creating something lasting and meaningful.
